Winter Blues

Cold weather got you down?  Us too, but our winter blues have us feeling inspired this year.  Few colors move flawlessly from season to season like blue, so check out how we take some of our favorite transitional pieces and add some layering for the winter chill.  Plus, you still have time to take advantage of all the Black Friday-Cyber Monday sales (how do you think we got ours?)

Hidden Gems of Georgetown

Everyone knows Georgetown has great shopping and charming historic storefronts.  In fact, it's home to some of our very favorite stores like Club Monaco, J Crew, Billy Reid, Alice and Olivia, Barbour, and Anthropologie.  But it can also be overcrowded and overwhelming.  Today we want to share with you a couple of the coolest menswear stores in Georgetown that are off the beaten path.

Ledbury
Ledbury is a small, Richmond based menswear store that cut it's teeth on shirtmaking after the owners spent some time getting to know the sartorial world while working on Saville Row in London.  They now offer an intentionally small but thoughtfully designed line of men's dress and casual wear focused on fit and quality, as well as made to measure and bespoke shirt programs.  In fact, in 2015 they acquired Creery Custom Shirts, a bespoke shirt maker in  Richmond that has been around since 1907.  They retained the staff and even have some of the patterns of former presidents still in the shop.

If you're anything like me, off the rack dress shirts make you look like a sack of potatoes.  Made-to-measure shirts were a complete game changer for me.  Yes, they are more expensive, but Ledbury made-to-measure is surprisingly well priced, made in Europe, and made with high quality Thomas Mason fabrics that hold up great to every day wear and tear.

As you'll see in future posts, I've got a lot of brand loyalty especially when I find a company that I think goes above and beyond it's price point (wait until you see my skincare products).  That said, Ledbury definitely has me hooked.

Sid Mashburn
Atlanta based Sid Mashburn holds a very special place in the world of menswear.  In fact, in 2015 GQ named it the best menswear store in America, and I'd be hard pressed to argue.  Sid provides a wide range of items under his own label, but also offers a flawlessly curated range of some of the best brands in the world, like Incotex, Salvatore Ferragamo, Filson, and Edward Green.  He also offers some of the most unique pieces I've ever seen, like shark skin belts and beaver lined Mac coats that will run you a cool $5k (the non-beaver variety is much more affordable).

Some of Sid's tailoring.  In house tailors are on site and ready help with made-to-measure, or just some free nips and tucks for off the rack clothes.
Ties on ties on ties...

What really sets Sid Mashburn apart is the service.   It's a no pressure environment filled will people who know every single product in the store.  There are more than enough employees on staff to really give you a personalized experience.  Service like that leads to going home with more stuff you really love instead of the things that end up in the back of your closet.

Ledbury and Sid Mashburn might not be one of the huge luxury brands that so many people covet, but if you've ever seen their products you know their quality is on par.  They both focus on classic style and wardrobe staples instead of trends and fast fashion.  There is a time and place for trendy pieces, but if you're going to spend the extra bucks, it may as well be on something you can have forever.

Our 2 Year Anniversary at Masseria

We have an ever growing list of delicious restaurants we are dying to try in Washington DC, but close to the top of that list was the trendy new modern Italian eatery Masseria, located just on the edge of Union Market.  Critics have praised their creative cocktails, upscale urban atmosphere, and well thought out tasting menus, so we thought it would be the perfect place to celebrate our two year anniversary.

We wish we took more pictures of the cocktails, but our dinner was just before we decided to start blogging.  That said, their signature smokey cognac based cocktail is delicious!

Despite great and timely service, Shelby clearly got a little antsy waiting for her food to arrive.  She looked beautiful in her Karen Millen dress though!

Cannolis

 Tuna crudo

Putanesca  with anchovie

    Lamb

Veal tartare smothered in black truffle

The food was fantastic.  Masseria definitely offers a fun twist on traditional Italian. They offer prix fixe menus of three, four, five, or six courses.  With the first three options, diners choose from a variety of appetizer, pasta, fish, vegetarian, and meat dishes, but the six course meal is chef's choice. We'll definitely be back!

The Ledbury Quail Hunt

Ledbury, one of our favorite menswear stores, has been hosting an annual Quail Hunt/Gather in Goochland, Virginia since 2011 for employees and special customers.  For the 5th annual Quail Hunt/Gather, they decided to open the event up to the public and we of course jumped at the chance to attend.  While the actual hunt is still reserved for Ledbury employees, the after party was well worth the trip.

For $45 a person, we had access too all-you-can-eat small plates prepared by some of the best chefs in Richmond, endless craft cocktails featuring Bulleit Bourbon, beer and wine from Hardywood and Veritas Vineyards, fresh shucked oysters, and hard apple cider.  Chefs from The Roosevelt, Metzger, and Heritage cooked up a steady stream of pint sized portions of duck confit cavatelli, grilled short ribs, and braised rabbit brunswick stew.

Throughout the day we enjoyed fly fishing lessons, archery demonstrations, and live music.

And Ledbury even released a special capsule collection of menswear and accessories, sold only at the event.

We will definitely be keeping our eyes open for next year's Quail Hunt/Gather.

Please check out Ledbury's carefully designed line of menswear, and their far superior blog at Ledbury.com.

Our New Blog

Hi all,

We are Devon and Shelby.  After MUCH encouragement from family and friends, we have decided to start a blog to share some of our favorite places and things.  We live in the Washington DC metro area, but we love to travel both far and near.  We plan to post at least every Sunday, but we will probably add small posts throughout the week as we discover cool new things we want to share with you.  We hope you enjoy,

Devon Bishop and Shelby Ann
